18 But as surely as God is faithful,(A) our message to you is not “Yes” and “No.”

but we have renounced the (A)things hidden because of shame, not walking in trickery nor (B)distorting the word of God, but by the open proclamation of the truth (C)commending ourselves to every person’s conscience in the sight of God.

Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways;(A) we do not use deception, nor do we distort the word of God.(B) On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience(C) in the sight of God.

For our (A)exhortation does not come from (B)error or (C)impurity or [a]by way of (D)deceit; (E)but just as we have been approved by God to be (F)entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, (G)not intending to please people, but to please God, who [b](H)examines our hearts. For we never came [c]with flattering speech, as you know, nor with (I)a pretext [d]for greed—(J)God is our witness— nor did we (K)seek honor from people, either from you or from others, though [e]we could have [f]asserted our authority as (L)apostles of Christ. But we [g]proved to be [h](M)gentle [i]among you. (N)As a nursing mother [j]tenderly cares for her own children, in the same way we had a fond affection for you and were delighted to (O)share with you not only the (P)gospel of God, but also our own [k]lives, because you had become [l]very dear to us.

For you recall, brothers and sisters, our (Q)labor and hardship: it was by (R)working night and day so as not to be a (S)burden to any of you, that we proclaimed to you the (T)gospel of God. 10 You are witnesses, and so is (U)God, of (V)how devoutly and rightly and blamelessly we [m]behaved toward you [n]believers; 11 just as you know how we were (W)exhorting and encouraging and (X)imploring each one of you as (Y)a father would his own children, 12 so that you would (Z)walk in a manner worthy of the God who (AA)calls you into His own kingdom and (AB)glory.

13 For this reason we also constantly (AC)thank God that when you received the (AD)word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it (AE)not as the word of mere men, but as what it really is, the word of God, (AF)which also is at work in you who believe. 14 For you, brothers and sisters, became (AG)imitators of (AH)the churches of God in Christ Jesus that are (AI)in Judea, for (AJ)you also endured the same sufferings at the hands of your own countrymen, (AK)even as they did from the Jews, 15 (AL)who both killed the Lord Jesus and (AM)the prophets, and [o]drove us out. [p]They are not pleasing to God, [q]but hostile to all people, 16 (AN)hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles (AO)so that they may be saved; with the result that they always [r](AP)reach the limit of their sins. But (AQ)wrath has come upon them [s]fully.

17 But we, brothers and sisters, having been orphaned from you by absence for a [t]short while—(AR)in [u]person, not in [v]spirit—were all the more eager with great desire (AS)to see your face. 18 [w]For (AT)we wanted to come to you—I, Paul, [x](AU)more than once—and (AV)Satan (AW)hindered us. 19 For who is our hope, or (AX)joy or crown of pride, in the presence of our Lord Jesus at His [y](AY)coming? Or is it not indeed you? 20 For you are (AZ)our glory and joy.

For the appeal we make does not spring from error or impure motives,(A) nor are we trying to trick you.(B) On the contrary, we speak as those approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel.(C) We are not trying to please people(D) but God, who tests our hearts.(E) You know we never used flattery, nor did we put on a mask to cover up greed(F)—God is our witness.(G) We were not looking for praise from people,(H) not from you or anyone else, even though as apostles(I) of Christ we could have asserted our authority.(J) Instead, we were like young children[a] among you.

Just as a nursing mother cares for her children,(K) so we cared for you. Because we loved you so much, we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God(L) but our lives as well.(M) Surely you remember, brothers and sisters, our toil and hardship; we worked(N) night and day in order not to be a burden to anyone(O) while we preached the gospel of God to you. 10 You are witnesses,(P) and so is God,(Q) of how holy,(R) righteous and blameless we were among you who believed. 11 For you know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his own children,(S) 12 encouraging, comforting and urging you to live lives worthy(T) of God, who calls(U) you into his kingdom and glory.

13 And we also thank God continually(V) because, when you received the word of God,(W) which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe. 14 For you, brothers and sisters, became imitators(X) of God’s churches in Judea,(Y) which are in Christ Jesus: You suffered from your own people(Z) the same things those churches suffered from the Jews 15 who killed the Lord Jesus(AA) and the prophets(AB) and also drove us out. They displease God and are hostile to everyone 16 in their effort to keep us from speaking to the Gentiles(AC) so that they may be saved. In this way they always heap up their sins to the limit.(AD) The wrath of God has come upon them at last.[b]

Paul’s Longing to See the Thessalonians

17 But, brothers and sisters, when we were orphaned by being separated from you for a short time (in person, not in thought),(AE) out of our intense longing we made every effort to see you.(AF) 18 For we wanted to come to you—certainly I, Paul, did, again and again—but Satan(AG) blocked our way.(AH) 19 For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown(AI) in which we will glory(AJ) in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes?(AK) Is it not you? 20 Indeed, you are our glory(AL) and joy.
