JEHOVAH-NISSI jĭ hō’ və nĭs’ ī (KJV tr. of יְהוָ֥ה׃׀ נִסִּֽי, Jehovah is my banner or standard). The name (KJV) given the altar erected by Moses to commemorate the defeat of the Amalekites in the wilderness at Rephidim at the hands of Israel under the leadership of Joshua (Exod 17:15). The Gr. VS and the Aram. Targum read differently. The name revealed Israel’s assurance that God was the One who gave them the victory and that He was the One around whom they in the future were to rally as a standard.
